The Power of Passing the Torch: Why Succession Planning Matters for PIHRA Volunteers

The Power of Passing the Torch: Why Succession Planning Matters for PIHRA Volunteers

By Lauren Sweeney, PIHRA Vice President & Chair, Volunteer Engagement Committee

As we approach the Fall election season at PIHRA, there’s never been a better time to reflect on the impact of our volunteer leadership—and how we can keep the momentum going for years to come. As the current Chair of the Volunteer Engagement Committee, I’ve seen firsthand how vital it is to plan ahead, cultivate future leaders, and ensure a smooth transition from one volunteer to the next.

Succession planning isn’t just a corporate buzzword. It’s a strategic, intentional process that ensures the legacy of leadership, culture, and continuity within our PIHRA chapters and committees.

Why Now?

The election process starts in August with the nominations process. That is just around the corner, and we want to set up our next cohort of volunteers for success. And it starts with you—current board members, committee members, chapter chairs, and chapter leaders —taking a few thoughtful steps to prepare for what’s next.

When we think about succession planning, we’re really talking about empowering others to lead. Whether you’ve served for one year or ten, you have valuable insights to pass on. You’ve likely experienced both the triumphs and the tough moments that come with leadership. What better way to support the mission of PIHRA than by sharing that wisdom and actively mentoring your successor?

Four Ways You Can Prepare Now

1. Start the Conversations Now

Begin discussing potential successors with your team or committee. Encourage members with initiative or passion to consider stepping into a leadership role. When people feel seen and supported, they’re more likely to say “yes” when the time comes.

2. Document the Essentials

A simple guide outlining your key tasks, timelines, and contacts can make a world of difference. This isn’t about perfection—it’s about making sure the next leader doesn’t have to start from scratch.

3. Extend the Invitation

Sometimes, all it takes is a personal ask. Reach out to a fellow member and say, “I think you’d be great in this role.” Those words can spark confidence and commitment in someone who’s been waiting for the nudge.

4. Plan to Attend the PIHRA Volunteer Leaders’ Summit on Saturday, January 10, 2026

The event allows PIHRA leaders to connect, grow, and align with the association’s strategic direction. The day includes essential leadership breakouts, valuable networking with peers and PIHRA leadership, and a critical update from the President and CEO. Please register for the event here, hold the date on your calendar, and encourage your board members to register.

The Legacy of Leadership

Succession planning isn’t about stepping aside—it’s about stepping up to ensure PIHRA’s legacy of strong leadership continues. As leaders, it’s our responsibility to lift others and leave our roles better than we found them.

As we look toward a new election cycle, let’s celebrate the work we’ve done and get excited about the future we’re building—together.

Thank you for your commitment to PIHRA and to our incredible HR community. Together, we rise.
