PIHRA Member Success Stories: HR Wins with PIHRA
From New Jobs to New Skills – Hear How PIHRA Makes a Difference
At PIHRA, we believe that when HR professionals come together, powerful things happen. For many of our members, PIHRA is more than just a professional association—it’s a lifeline during transition, a catalyst for career growth, and a source of lasting community.
We’re proud to share a few inspiring member success stories that highlight how PIHRA continues to make a difference in the lives of HR professionals across Southern California.
Finding New Purpose After Career Transition
“Great question—how has PIHRA helped me? The answer is simple: PIHRA was there when I needed a job.”
In August 2024, after 28 years with the same organization, John Horn, SHRM-SCP, MPA, suddenly found himself laid off and entering an uncertain job search that would last nearly a year. Like many in transition, John was anxious about the future. But through PIHRA, he found a community that not only supported him but helped him stay connected to his professional identity.
By attending meetings, networking, and leaning into the HR community, John discovered encouragement, resources, and a renewed sense of purpose. Inspired by his journey, he joined the PIHRA Pasadena Board and spearheaded the creation of a new HR Professionals in Transition group, offering guidance to others facing similar challenges.
Today, John has landed a new role as Vice President of People, Culture, and Development at the YMCA of Metropolitan Los Angeles, but he continues to pay it forward. His advice for HR professionals in transition? “Get involved with your local PIHRA chapter—it makes such a positive impact.”
Building Confidence and Community Through Connection
For Sonja Montiel, MA Edu, PIHRA became the bridge between professions. Transitioning from education into HR after years as an HR-of-one, her mantra was simple: “Learn.” That drive led her to PIHRA Ventura County, where she found a network of colleagues who quickly became trusted friends.
Through volunteering and speaking opportunities, Sonja’s involvement grew from member to leader, eventually serving as Chair, Membership Committee on the PIHRA Board. Along the way, she gained not only knowledge of real-time HR issues but also a deeply connected professional community she could rely on for support.
Reflecting on her journey, Sonja says, “My love for service quickly accelerated me from member to volunteer to leader. I am so proud to be part of nurturing the special sauce that PIHRA is—local, communal, and deeply committed to elevating HR professionals through connection and collaboration.”
Growing Leadership Skills and Creating Impact Locally
For Michelle Landrum, PIHRA has been a space to grow as a leader while making a meaningful difference. As Chair for PIHRA Pasadena, Michelle has sharpened her leadership skills, built stronger relationships, and found inspiration working alongside other committed HR professionals.
From organizing in-person events to launching a virtual peer exchange program, Michelle has seen firsthand how PIHRA creates opportunities for connection, collaboration, and career growth.
“Over the past few years of volunteering with PIHRA, I’ve experienced professional and personal growth, and I’ve found a true sense of belonging in this community,” Michelle shares. “Together, we’ve created something that genuinely impacts our local HR community.”
